Sungmi may have a cold-looking appearance, but her personality is anything but. Loud, spontaneous, and energetic, she is constantly moving around, tackling her groupmates (with love) and shoving food at them whenever she has any to spare. She's very enthusiastic about things she enjoys, which include music, cosplaying, and video games, and is always trying to drag people into her hobbies even when they're uncertain about them. She's totally harmless, and will stop being so aggressive in her enthusiasm if someone asks her to - she just really wants people to enjoy things that she enjoys. She's also the type of friend that sends way too many memes to everyone.
As an idol, she shows her charisma and charm through her energy and joking around on stage. At fanmeets, she's always the first to put on silly accessories that the fans give them, sometimes even stealing something particularly goofy from another member just so she can take funny pictures. She loves her fellow members, although they sometimes joke that she's the real maknae due to her childish nature and energy. At nights in the dorms, she can often be found lounging around in one of her many animal onesies, playing around with her hair and makeup and posting selcas of her work on social media.
There are times, however, when her energy will drop and she'll get quiet. Sungmi suffers from endometriosis, a chronic condition that gives her semi-frequent pains that can sometimes be so severe that she has to be curled up in bed with a hot water bottle for a time. It's one of the reasons why she tries to make up for these times by being so energetic when she feels good - she hates having the other members worry about her and does her best to put on a brave face and keep working as much as she can.
Some of her other hobbies include watching musicals, collecting cabochons, and trying out Instagram-worthy foods - whenever she gets the chance, she likes to explore around Seoul and see what pretty and cute foods she can find! She's obsessed with taking pictures and showing her discoveries to their fans.
Sungmi grew up as the middle child of five - two older brothers, one younger sister, and one younger brother. As such, she learned from a young age that she needed to be loud in order to get attention, since her parents' were so divided between all of the siblings. It wasn't a bad or neglected childhood by any means - her and her siblings got along well for the most part (although she isn't particularly close to her oldest brother) and they had enough money from their parents' jobs to live comfortably. She just... was always the smallest and therefore most outgoing of the children, just to make sure she wasn't ignored whenever she needed something.
She was a typical girly girl growing up - she enjoyed playing with dolls, dressing up, sneaking into her mom's makeup case and trying things on (much to her mother's chagrin). She and her sister spent a lot of time together, sometimes playing harmless pranks on their brothers that seemed to backfire more often than not. Her second-oldest brother, Sungwoo, showed a knack for music at an early age, especially in singing and playing guitar. His skills and passion influenced both Sungmi as well as their youngest brother, and she could often be found sitting in Sungwoo's room and listening in fascination as he played. She tried learning how to play the guitar as well, but she could never sit still long enough to practice for any more than a few minutes at a time, so she would just chime in along with the singing portion of it. And they were pretty good together!
By the time Sungmi and Sungwoo were in their mid-teens, they had a decent following on Youtube from videos that they'd post of themselves performing song covers. Their youngest brother, Seojun, occasionally took part as well, although he was more interested in dancing than creating music by that time. Always curious to try new things, Sungmi also attempted to dance as well, although she didn't catch onto it quite as quickly as she did with singing. Their parents, encouraged by their children's passion for music, encouraged them to take lessons in the areas that they most enjoyed - and for Sungmi, that was vocals.
Unfortunately, life wasn't easy for her in other regards. Sungmi began developing intense periodic abdominal pains around her sixteenth birthday, and after several months of this, she went in to see a doctor to find out what the problem was. After some tests and ultrasounds, they discovered that she had cysts on her ovaries, which they determined should be removed with surgery. After the surgery was completed, she was diagnosed with endometriosis - something they told her couldn't be cured, but was somewhat manageable through medicine and further surgery if more cysts developed. It was a difficult period of time for her, and she still suffers from the symptoms of endometriosis on a semi-frequent basis, but she tries not to let it hinder her life too much.
Thankfully, soon after this difficult period, Sungmi was scouted by EME - they saw her and her brother's videos online, and wanted to bring them both into their trainee program. Ecstatic for the opportunity, Sungmi gladly accepted the offer and moved to Seoul with Sungwoo in order to work for the idol company. After a couple of years of intense work and struggle, she was able to debut with Aphrodite. Sungmi couldn't be happier with her work and the people she's working with, and she hopes to stay in the business for as long as the company (and her health) allows.
